Philippa Hambly on Creating A Social Ecology Where Every Creator Can Thrive #26
SHOW NOTES
In today’s episode I’m talking to Philippa Hambly, a theatre & movement practitioner. Philippa’s work is based in mask, movement, clown, mime and storytelling and She has toured extensively internationally and in the UK, collaborating and devising with a number of companies including 1927, Redcape Theatre, Open Sky, Mechanimal, Brù Theatre and the English National Opera.
Before starting her theatre career, Philippa trained and worked as a nurse. She’s an ongoing collaborator with Chimera Network, co-devising Careful, a dance-theatre piece and workshop initiative for and with nursing students, led by Dr Alex Mermikides. Since the pandemic, the project created online learning packs aimed at key self-care and communication skills, supporting well-being during this unprecedented time, and integrating performance and healthcare education.
She has a Masters in Integral Movement and Performance Praxis from Arthaus.berlin where she currently teaches movement and devised theatre.
We talk about the role of artists today and creating a social and economic ecology where the creator inside each one of us can thrive. Philippa takes us on a journey with her, shining a light on so many fascinating questions and insights.
Let’s explore together.
“Theatre has the power to change people’s perspectives - if not change, at least offer new perspectives: different ways of thinking, different ways of feeling. It gives us an opportunity to imagine and see that things can be different.”
We’re talking about…
Answering our creative call.
A creator’s multiple journeys.
The relationship between creating and facilitating art.
The artist as a creativity enabler.
Creating a social and economic ecology where the creator inside each one of us can thrive.
“Today there’s a failure to believe that our imaginative experiences are real - or valuable. In theatre you create a container of space and time, where anything - within the realm of your imagination, can happen.”
